INSECT ANATOMY

Unlike us vertebrates, insects have an exoskeleton, a hard outer shell made of chitin that provides support and protection. Their bodies are divided into three distinct regions: head, thorax, and abdomen.

Head

The head is the sensory hub of the insect, containing the following:

  • Compound eyes: These are made up of thousands of tiny lenses, giving insects a wide field of view but not very good detail. Some insects also have ocelli, which are simple eyes that detect light and dark.

  • Antennae: These are sensory organs used for touch, smell, and taste. They come in many shapes and sizes, depending on the insect.
